Why London provides a lasting impact on your future business career

Studying abroad is a transformative experience for every student, and it’s especially compelling for business majors seeking to expand their horizons and deepen their global perspectives.

London’s dynamic business environment provides the perfect setting for your educational journey. Here are the top reasons a business major should consider studying abroad in London.

1. Learn from Industry Leaders and Global Experts

London is a historic financial powerhouse, home to institutions like the London Stock Exchange and influential multi-national companies.

On the Business and Entrepreneurship in London program, we had the privilege to engage with global experts like Davide Zirone, who has worked with companies like Apple and TikTok. He shared his knowledge on the rapid rise of TikTok and the importance of innovation, highlighting how critical it is to stay ahead in a fast-paced global market while emphasizing the growing awareness of corporate social responsibility and data protection in today’s business environment.

The program included an excursion to the iconic Lloyd’s building, where we learned about London’s financial history and impact on global markets. Hearing directly from professionals active in the industry, including executives from Barclays, made the lessons tangible and directly applicable to our future careers.

These experiences not only deepened my knowledge of the financial world but also inspired me to think more critically about the impact of business decisions.

2. Take Unique Courses

The program’s academic component was designed to complement London’s dynamic business environment, so I was able to take courses in business economics, digital technology, and brand management—each presenting unique challenges. The coursework was rigorous and strongly emphasized real-world applications. We frequently presented our findings in class, vastly improving my public speaking skills and ability to articulate complex ideas.

One project involved analyzing the UK market for a new app called Beli. It required extensive research into consumer behavior and competitive analysis. We also devised a brand strategy for the app targeting British audiences. The project honed my research and presentation skills while giving me practical experience in adapting business strategies to fit new cultural contexts.

These academic challenges were crucial in helping me develop the confidence that is so essential in the business world.

3. Gain an International Outlook on Business

The city’s diverse business environment exposed me to new management styles, consumer behavior, and market trends. We explored how UK businesses approach corporate social responsibility and learned about their more stringent regulations and stronger emphasis on sustainability compared to the US. Their focus on ethical business practices was a significant learning point for me, highlighting the importance of adapting to varying regulatory environments.

The cultural nuances between the UK and the US delivered fascinating insights into consumer behavior. For example, in the UK, there is a stronger emphasis on heritage and tradition in branding, which contrasts sharply with the innovation-driven approach seen in the US.

This international outlook is something I will bring back to my studies at UC. It will give me a competitive edge in understanding global markets in the future as well.

4. Build a Network for Life

As one of the world’s leading business capitals, London makes an ideal place to start building your global network. On the program, I formed friendships with other business majors with similar experiences. These connections have, and will continue to be, invaluable both personally and professionally as we continue to support each other’s growth long after returning to our hometowns.

The connections I made with industry professionals were equally valuable, and I was able to learn from their experiences and gain insights that are not typically covered in textbooks.

These relationships have the potential to become lifelong mentors and acquaintances, offering career advice and support long after the program has ended.

5. Benefit from Efficient Transportation

London’s renowned transportation network isn’t just about getting from here to there; it played a crucial role in my academic and personal growth. The program provided each student with an Oyster card, which allowed unlimited travel across the city and beyond.

The easy transportation enabled me to attend guest lectures, company visits, and cultural events all over London so I could make the most of my time there.

Whether I was traveling to a museum for a class project or attending an excursion to another part of the city, the efficient transportation system made everything accessible.

Moreover, the city’s connectivity made it possible to participate in internships, giving many of us a practical understanding of the local business environment. Weekend trips to business hubs like Manchester and European financial centers like Frankfurt further enriched the learning experience. They proved to me that London is the ideal base for expanding our business knowledge.

6. Explore London’s Culture and Impact on Business

While all cultures can be described as vibrant, London’s cultural landscape directly influences the business environment. The city’s blend of tradition and modernity is reflected in the local consumer behavior and impacts marketing strategies and business practices. A strong sense of heritage infuses British brands and plays a significant role in marketing. Understanding cultural differences in branding was a key takeaway from my brand management course.

Living a Londoner’s lifestyle provided daily opportunities to observe how culture influences business practices. From exploring the eclectic neighborhoods of Shoreditch and Camdon—known for their creative industries—to attending West End performances, I saw firsthand how culture drives innovation and consumer engagement.

Understanding these cultural nuances has given me a deeper appreciation of how businesses can adapt their strategies to new markets – an essential skill for any business major!
